Day 28 of #RPGaDay2022 and it's Style Sunday, and it's all about your favourite cover art. That's tricky, because there's a lot of really cool cover art to choose from. One that really stood out for me when I was a kid and just discovering RPGs was the awesome cover for Star Frontiers.
Really sold the game to me, and I couldn't wait to play it.
The other game that I bought purely because of the cover was CJ Carella's WitchCraft.
That cover, along with the way that the book is smaller, digest sized, really sold it to me, and started me down a slippery slope buying all of Eden's games, and eventually writing some of them!
West End Games' Star Wars RPG was just perfect as well. Okay, so it wasn't original artwork, but it was everything I could have hoped for in an RPG, and that cover was wonderful.

Mmm, yeah, that Witchcraft cover. I don't know what it is exactly, but it was truly attractive. I didn't buy it at the time, a friend had it -- he had a huge collection of all sorts of RPGs, and even gave me a copy of that same Star Wars RPG book!
Another cover that really grabbed my attention and fascinated 17 year old me was that of Vampire The Masquerade (2nd edition, I think?) The Minds Eye Theater box with the white "tragedy" mask was also amazing.
I mean, going to a comic book/RPG shop back then was just like a kid going to a candy shop. There were wonders everywhere you'd look.
These days, a few covers that have captured my imagination:
- The cover for A Song of Ice and Fire (A Game of Thrones Edition) by Green Ronin
- Kult: Divinity Lost published by Modiphius
- Tales from the Loop (of course) by Free League
...and I guess this is it!
I always liked the art on the original Call of Cthulhu box - the three intrepid investigators approaching a Scooby Doo-esque house in a graveyard on a lightning-lashed night whilst a massive green tentacle enters the frame from bottom right. Sold the game to me before I’d even read any Lovecraft!
